Salmon farm developer signs NOK 100m contract for site preparation

A company planning a land-based salmon farm producing 36,500 gutted weight tonnes of fish annually has signed a contract worth more than NOK 100 million (£7.1m) for the development of its plot at Tjeldbergodden in Aure municipality, More og Romsdal county, Norway.

Work by contractor Tverås Maskin og Transport AS is scheduled to begin next month.

“This marks the start of the construction project and is an important milestone for us,” said Hans Ramsvik, chief executive of Salfjord AS, in a press release.

The contract covers the preparation of the entire Salfjord plot for the first construction phase that will start in 2026.

Several good offers

“There was significant interest from subcontractors, and we received several good offers,” said Ramsvik.

Tverås Maskin og Transport delivered the best bid, although Ramsvik said that a good reputation and reference projects from the aquaculture industry also played a role in the decision. “Tverås Maskin og Transport has, among other projects, assisted (salmon farmer) Sinkaberg Hansen in the development of the Svaberget industrial area in Nærøy municipality,” explained Ramsvik.

He added that the contract’s value is higher than the contract sum alone. “Income from the sale of minerals is not included in the contract sum and will be shared between the companies,” he said. Tverås Maskin og Transport's core areas of expertise include production of crushed stone and stone materials.

Project manager

Norconsult Ålesund has assisted Salfjord in project planning and selection of subcontractors for the project. Norconsult has also supported Salfjord in the planning processes at Tjeldbergodden and on “Salfjord II” at Hyttneset further west in Aure municipality. Norconsult will serve as project manager during the plot work at Tjeldbergodden.

In addition to the plot development, Salfjord is also engaged in a major capital raise. “We are fully focused on capital raising, and we are therefore very pleased to have skilled and trustworthy partners in Tverås and Norconsult, who will ensure progress on the groundwork,” Ramsvik concluded.

Salfjord will use a hybrid recirculating / flow-through facility from Artec Aqua, which supplied the system used by land-based fish farmer Salmon Evolution at Indre Harøy, also in Møre og Romsdal.
