Innovasea lands contract in Iceland

US supplier will deliver oxygenation solution to land-based salmon smolt facility

North American aquaculture equipment company Innovasea has expanded its reach to Iceland.

The Boston-headquartered supplier has won an order from Thor Salmon (formerly Landeldi), which is building a 20,000-tonnes-per-year land-based fish farm in stages in Thorlakshofn, south Iceland.

Thor Salmon will install three of Innovasea’s Gas Management Towers (GMT) at its smolt facility. Innovasea, which has partnered with Iceland technology company KAPP to deliver its solutions to the country’s fish farmers, said that, uniquely, its GMT leverages gravity, not pressure, to move water. This innovative solution to oxygenation can cut energy costs by up to 77% compared to a pressurised oxygen system.

More compact

Additionally, the Innovasea GMT combines a low-head oxygenator and a degasser into a single unit. By offering an all-in-one gravity-based solution, facilities gain a more compact, safer, and simplified alternative to pressurised systems, said Innovasea.

As well as three GMTs, Thor Salmon will use several dissolved oxygen (DO) sensors and an automated control panel, enabling the company to more efficiently monitor and control changing oxygen levels remotely.

Thor Salmon aims to complete its smolt facility in Q1 2025 and receive the first batch of eggs shortly after. The first stage of its grow-out facility will have a capacity of 5,000 tonnes annually.

An efficient solution

“Our collaboration with Innovasea offers us an efficient, state-of-the-art gas management solution that will play an important role in producing outstanding salmon smolts in our smolt facility,” said Thor Salmon co-founder Jonatan Thordarson.

KAPP chief technology officer Valthor Hermannson said: “This is an exciting time for Iceland’s aquaculture industry.

“KAPP has been a leading force for Icelandic fishing, aquaculture, and other industries. Now, by partnering with Innovasea, we’re making the latest technology available to drive our industry forward. Servicing and supporting our customers is our number one priority.”
