Approval is result of systematic and targeted efforts by skilled employees, says fish farmer

Land-based fish farmer Gigante Salmon has achieved certification under the GlobalGAP standard, which it said was a significant milestone for the company and a confirmation that its production meets the requirements of the international standard for good agricultural and aquaculture practices.

“The company is pleased with this recognition, which is the result of systematic and targeted efforts by skilled employees,” Gigante said in a stock market announcement.

“GlobalGAP ensures sustainable food production with a strong focus on food safety, environmental protection, animal welfare, and the health and safety of workers.”

Gigante Salmon is growing its fish in a flow-through pool (Basin 3) excavated into the bedrock of the island of Lille Indre Rosøy in Rødøy municipality, Norway. It was the first of three pools to be completed at the site, with Basins 1 and 2 currently at different stages of development.

Harvesting in Q2

The company stocked its first smolts in Pool 3 in January 2024, and the first fish are scheduled for harvest in the second quarter of this year, with a total volume of approximately 550 tonnes (head on gutted).

Gigante Salmon had 160,852 fish in the facility at the end of Q2 2024, and in January 2025 the fish had an average weight of 2.7 kilos. After harvesting the fish in Q2 this year, it plans to stock 2.2 million smolts in Q3.

Two batches of 640,000 smolts were stocked at the end of January last year, but only around 161,000 survived for a variety of reasons.

Gigante's long-term plan is to raise smolts to around a kilo in Basin 3, then transfer them to the production pools (Basins 1 and 2) for grow-out.

The company said today that it continues its work on optimising operations and biological conditions to ensure good fish welfare and efficient production.
