65,000 smolts escaped from Mowi facility
On Saturday, December 7, there was an escape from Mowi's land-based facility in Glomfjord in Meløy municipality in connection with the delivery of smolt.
This is reported by Ola Helge Hjetland, communications director at Mowi, to LandbasedAQ.com's Norwegian sister site, LandbasedAQ.
"Approximately 65,000 salmon with an average weight of 115 grams have escaped. Extensive recapture activities are now under way in the area in collaboration with local fishermen," said Hjetland.
The Mowi comms chief said the company takes the incident very seriously and will, together with Norway's Directorate of Fisheries, investigate how the incident occurred and how such incidents can be avoided in the future.
"The entire company is working hard and systematically to prevent escapes, and the number of incidents has decreased significantly in recent years. It is therefore very regrettable that we are experiencing incidents of this nature," he said.
In Glomfjord, Mowi operates its by far largest smolt facility in Region North in Norway. Here, smolts are produced and delivered to the company's sea facilities from Trøndelag to Nord-Troms.
