200,000 trout fry die in a hatchery

Norway: Thanks to the timely action of the company's technicians, operating in Norway, half of the Arctic trout fry were saved.

An explosion in an oxygen cone caused the death of about 200,000 Arctic trout fry in a Norwegian hatchery.

The explosion occurred on the afternoon of July 24, and with the help of a technician, the Sigerfjord Fisk system was back up and running at 2 AM on July 25, which managed to save about half of the fry.

"Most of the time we receive false alarms, but when I saw it was a cone that adds oxygen to the water, I became even more worried," said the owner, Trond Geir Reinsnes.

"Losing 200,000 of the 650,000 fish is not a total crisis. It would have been worse if we had fewer fry in the water," the businessman specified.

Investment

Reinsnes and his staff have now had to invest in new cones and are working to increase production to cover the loss.

"When working with live animals, some bumps are to be expected. In that case, it's important to look forward and be able to rise again," emphasized the owner of Sigerfjord Fisk.

The incident is being investigated and Reinsens reported that he will receive compensation for the lost fish.

Sigerfjord Fisk is the largest supplier of Arctic char in Norway. The company is based in Sigerfjord, in the Sortland municipality in Vesterålen, and has production facilities in Fiskfjord, in the Hadsel municipality on Hinnøya.
